Hiking Trail 4
- ascent: 5 - 6 hours
- descent: 4 - 5 hours
Please take along:
- enough water
- a lunch package
- a radiotelephone
- gloves
- good climbing shoes
This is not really a hiking trail, but describes the climb to the highest peak of the Otjipatera Mountains, which is about 2,000 meters above sea level. The difference in elevation to the Lodge is about 800 meters, and although climbing up this trail does not mean mountaineering, it leads through rough and stony terrain on unmarked trails.
We strongly recommend that the climb be attempted during the cold season even though many guests at ETUSIS LODGE have climbed to the peak during all seasons.
Since there is not a marked path, it is really difficult to indicate the exact length of the trail. It is safe to reckon on a 5-6 hour ascent and a 4-5 hour descent. Therefore it is advisable to start at dawn. The best climb is from over the left side and to follow the saddle of the mountain range, bearing in mind that there are several gorges and ravines to pass through.

Even through the climb is not easy and therefore not advisable for everybody, the views whilst climbing and from the peak are really spectacular.

On the peak, there is a book (Lunchpaket und ein Funkgerät) in which you will find the signatures of many guests from the ETUSIS LODGE. You are welcome to add yours. You also will find the receiver installation for our radiotelephone and we are always grateful if guests take up a cloth to clean the solar panel of the installation.
It is very important to take along enough water, a lunch package (if required) and a radiotelephone to keep contact with us along the way. You will need a good pair of hiking boots and gloves are also recommended since the rocks get really hot during the day to the point that you cannot touch them with your bare hands when you need to support yourself.
For those who are fit enough to really enjoy both ascent and decent, this climb can be a big adventure
